Alright, the public has spoken, and they wanted features. And more features. So, I’ve added them. Plus there was a small (but crucial) mistake in the puzzle generator before that made the puzzles too easy. Now they should be sufficiently more difficult. These are the features/changes from version 1.0:
- Auto-pencil marks
- Timer
- More difficult puzzles (for the masochists)
- Congratulations when you finish
- Blank Puzzle option w/solver
- Keyboard navigation
- Smaller size
- Fixed small problem of not being able to click on bottom-most cells
Let me know what you think…Happy sudoku-ing!

The new features look good but the widget no longer works properly. I can’t enter numbers into squares 1-6 in row 9 and sometimes a puzzle will give incorrect results; it tells me a number is incorrect when it is the last one in a block. If make it solve the puzzle then there are several blocks with 2 numbers the same.
The clock seems to be getting in the way of those numbers…I’ll try and fix that asap. For now you can still enter them with the keyboard entry. The puzzles will sometimes have 2 possible numbers in one cell, but only one of them will solve the puzzle correctly. Are you sure you didn’t make a mistake somewhere else? If not, send me an email at projects@bdeboer.com with a screen shot of the puzzle and I’ll check into it. Thanks!
Nice improvements but sorry I can see my congratulations since I can’t fill in those 5 cells in the bottom left hand side. I see you’ve already discovered this problem. I think having those pencil marks auto fill in and highlighting incorrect answers makes it too easy and tempting to cheat!
Thanks for your work on this. My favorite widget by far. Not getting enough work done though…. Also I registered here and used my name the first time and now can’t figure out how to log in successfully again.
I fixed the bottom cells issue. Please download and install again. Thanks! Sorry for the problem.
Either the auto-marks or the highlight incorrect feature is broken. After showing incorrect marks and seeing half of what I did was “wrong”, I cleared all those spots and turned on auto-marks for the entire widget. Sitting on my desktop right now are two pictures. The first shows a cell with only a 1 mark in it, telling me that it should be filled with the 1 number. The second image shows the 1 number in that cell, marked wrong. The number that it marks correct for that cell is 7, but it doesn’t show 7 as a mark.
Ok, after looking at the picture again, it’s the highlight incorrect feature that’s wrong. There is a 7 on the same row as that cell, so if I put a 7 there it marks it right yet I have two 7’s on the same row.
Some puzzles have more than one correct outcome. Ex: With only 4 blanks left to a puzzle I had
3,4
4,3
or
4,3
3,4
as two valid solutions, but only one was deemed correct by the computer.
With auto-pencil marks selected I don’t seem to be able to remove numbers from a cell manually.
I can’t get the widget to do anything at all. It seems to be installed but no numbers appear in the grid, and no amount of clicking, right-clicking, keypresses etc seem to help…
it broke. far right column, already had a 3, and in the second box from the top. The only correct answer it would accept for the 4th block down was 3… should’ve been 6.
definitely broken
Great widget.
Even with the solving function crippled and often unable to regocnize correct answers, playing Sudoku with this app is a great way to spend one’s time. I hope you get to fixing this problem soon so that I can spend even the last bits of my work motivation solving sudoku problems
One minor error report - the program’s built-in help still reads “click on the numbers at the top to choose a number to enter” even though the numbers are now at the bottom of the widget.
How do you use the new l/L option to start with a blank puzzle?
To start with a blank puzzle switch to the back side of the widget (click on the i in the lower right corner). Select blank from the difficulty level. Once you’ve filled in all the cells that you want (the ones in the newspaper/other source that you are using), hit the L key (upper or lowercase) - that will lock all of those cells and start the timer. Good luck!
This is the best user interface that I’ve seen but there are times when some of the medium puzzles are unsolvable without help from the application. I’m sure of this. I’ve come across it on several occasions. I’ve been addicted to this game for some time so I have a bit of experience.
(Same guy) By the way, I have version 1.21
I see you said it was made smaller, is there anyway to make the game board actually larger?
It’s fun, thanks!
