I’ve been working on Sudoku 2.0 as promised and I’m just testing it now to make sure all works as hoped. I hope to have it in the next week. One thing though, is I’d like to release a universal binary version but I have no way of testing it on an intel machine. If any of you Sudoku fans out there have there hands on one, let me know and I’ll send you the newest version for you to try out. Thanks!
If you are meaning you’d like to test it on a windows XP machine, I’d be glad to test it. I have the Mac version and love it.

Dude. I’m on a PC, and I totally dig Sudoku. Hit me. By the way, I made an anonymous comment on your last thread right before you switched over. Some good suggestions for improvements I think.
Great implementation. I appreciate the auto pencil marks. There was no list of upcoming improvements, and I had a few feature requests.
Could auto pencil marks detect single options. When there is only one pencil mark left, have it set the value. It would be fun to values cascade in, but mostly it would save on mousing/tabbing around.
Could auto pencil marks still be editable. There are occasionally things that it does not pick up that I might like to pencil in. Specifically, if two blocks in a section are 1,2, then you know no other blocks will be 1 or 2 in that section. I do not want auto pencil to detect that, but I would still like to make note of it. Auto pencil should still remove other values from the modified block as appropriate.
Also, if you could make a level above diablo, like little girl with physics books. The range of difficulty still seems pretty wide on that setting, and sometimes they are too easy. I have no idea what is involved in generating boards, so I do not really know what I am asking, but make it hard.
Kind of an off the wall suggestion, but more people might play if it was fruits or pets or something other than numbers. My girlfriend has no interest, but if it was kittens and squirrels she might. So maybe skins or something to make the game more accessible or less intimidating. I think it would actually be harder to play, which might be a good thing. This would never work on paper, but widgets are made for it. Maybe in 3,0 or something.
Thanks a lot. Again, great implementation.
What about a manaul pencil mark feature, Let me decribe. In playing Sudoku I, at times, like to not on a square that there is a certainity that a number can’t go there. I like to mark the possiblity that a number can go in a square.
So a opiton-click could be used to mark a square as a posiblity and cmd-click can mark a squae as eliminated.
Addditonal tracking would be great also. Say I had marked a square with a possible 3. But had since added a 3 to the row, the 3 would we removed from the square.
I know that similar thinks can be do with auto-marking, but I think automarking at time makes thinks to easy
My two cents…
I second the suggestion for skins. I actually prefer the plain black text on white, with bold boxes surrounding the 9 main boxes.
A bigger board would also be great, especially with these new screens with increasingly higher resolution at the same physical size.
Just receivd a 20″ iMac Duo with 256MB VRAM and 2GB memory. Let me know if you want me to test Sudoku 2.0 Universal Binary
I have downloaded your widget several times and cannot figure out how to get it going. Its just plain white boxes. Please help.
I also have a 20″ iMac Duo… and am certainly willing to help you test your universal binary. The current version is awesome… and I can’t wait to see improvements!
Please add the ability to make the display larger or “full screen”. The addiction can strain the eyes!
i have a mac laptop but i use a pc at work
does this work in pc?
if not, do you know any links?
Nice widget! Da*n you for making Sudoku even more accessible …
I second Eric’s request of making auto pencil marks editable by the user.
Either that, or auto pencil marks should take doubles and triples, in columns, rows, and blocks into account, and remove those doubles and triples from the other squares in the affected column, row, or block. But ,the logic to do that may require more resources than should be expended on auto pencil marks. Even the “ultimate”, IMHO, “Sudoku Susser” does not take double and triples into account in its automatic “hints” (what SS calls auto pencil marking), when enabled, but, it does allow those hints to be edited by the user. And, it does take doubles and triples into account, when the user is really stuck, and invokes the “deduce” function, but, that function may take a while to come up with a result.
I also agree that too much automation isn’t in the spirit of Sudoku. If the user can’t be bothered with looking through the squares to see if any only have one possibility remaining, perhaps the pursuit of tic-tac-toe would be less “stressful” …
Cheers,
CW

great widget, I’ve just got one suggestion for future versions, if you have the chance.
I’ve found that it helps (on paper versions) to pencil mark the numbers in the appropriate area of a number, like a telephone. i.e. The number 1 would always appear in the left top corner, the number 5 in the middle etc. therefore, you can glance at the box with pencil marks and not have to squint to read the TINY little numbers that you have penciled in. So, if you had penciled in one box the numbers 1 and 6, then they would not be beside each other, but 1 would be in the top left and 6 would be in middle right of box. Sorry for rambling, you get it, right? Thanks again for making the puzzle, it’s going to help me pass the time on the plane tomorrow. Best, Brunson
Hi I’m using the mac widget version and i like it. My suggestion is to streamline the entry of numbers… currently when entering pencil marks its click number shift click cell. Its to slow. It should be more like using a spreadsheet- click cell then press a number or numbers for pencil marks. putting the final number should be when you use the shift (or caps lock). Since you usually do more pencil marks (at least i do) than the final number minimizes keystroke mouse clicks. Good job keep up the good work.
oops forgot How about an option for a larger board size? similar to a normal, large and family size radio buttons
.
Terrific widget! My whole family has enjoyed it immensely… Thought about some improvements:
1) A print function to create archaic paper versions for the bus, plane, etc. (I don’t own a laptop, sorry)
2) The ability to send created puzzles to friends & family.
Thanks, and keep up the good work!
