Sudoku Web Version

Posted on Wednesday 1 February 2006

Ok - so another small project I’ve been working on is making the widget not a widget. In other words, a web browser version that is platform independent - or at least sort of. It’s ugly and it’s definitely a work in progress…but for those pc (and mac pre-10.4) users dying to play sudoku here it is.

Currently, it probably only works reliably in firefox (and probably safari). It is very basic so far, but I’m planning on adding skins/themes for those folks wanting to play sudoku with squirrels and chipmunks instead of numbers. Plus there will be larger puzzles for the masochistic folks out there - 6×6…(ouch it takes several hours to generate so there won’t be more than one new one per day). Also planned…

  • user generated puzzle ratings to help the problem of determining just how hard a puzzle is
  • saving puzzles in mid stream so you can go back to them later
  • true high scores with folks competing on the same puzzles instead of a random puzzle
  • timer (of course)
  • and more!

Try it out and let me know what you think. The key commands are slightly different mostly to accomodate large puzzles and browser limitations. So you can either drag and drop numbers from the left or use the arrow keys to move around. Here’s some other key commands:

  • space bar/shift-space bar - move to next/previous open space
  • 1-9 (and a-z on larger puzzles) insert number/letter into selected square
  • shift 1-9 (number pad only) and A-Z on larger puzzles - insert pencil mark
  • =/+ Assist this cell/all cells
  • ctrl-= Auto assist
  • - Hide/show incorrect answers
  • delete - remove pencil marks and/or inserted number

Have at it and let me know what you think! I’ll keep you posted on any updates that are coming!

p.s. and thanks to prototype and scriptaculous for the ajax and drag and drop functionality - more of that to come!

Hey Bri. You probably already know, but just in case you don’t, I’ve got nothing but a white screen in MS IE. Later!
