Sudoku Widget

Posted on Sunday 21 August 2005

The sudoku widget has hit version 1.0 - So I’m releasing it to the general public for consumption. If you don’t know what Sudoku is yet, boy are you in for some sleepless nights. It’s a ton of fun, but can drive you mad after a while. This widget generates random puzzles with four levels of difficulty, has the option to show you when you entered an incorrect answer, allows for “pencil” marks for temporary numbers, and the best part is it’s free. To download click on the download link to the left or click here. To play, install the widget*, click on one of the numbers at the top to begin entering numbers (or type the relevant key) and click on the empty field. If you make a mistake just click on the same empty field with the same or a different number to remove and/or insert another number. For the “pencil” marks, shift-click on the field. You can remove pencil marks by shift-clicking again with the number you want to remove. If you have any questions or comments, let me know by adding comments below. For general Sudoku information check out www.sudoku.com.

Very nice! I just got in contact with Suduko a few days ago and like it a lot. One improvement I’d like is to highlight “illegal” moves while not highlighting “wrong but legal” moves. Using the highlighting right now makes it way too easy.

    Thanks

This is my favorite Sudoku widget! Thanks. I have only one suggestion….can you make something happen when the puzzle is completed? I want some sort of reward—flashing numbers or something!

Your widget is great. I downloaded it from the Apple website today. Next time I will have to try the pencil marks.

The one thing I miss is a timer. I love trying to improve my time.

    Thanks.

After a few games on your widget, my Mac froze. Is there a fix, or how do I uninstall Sudoku?

I just installed Tiger and this was the first Widget I downloaded. It is great, particularly because of the ability to pencil in multiple possible numbers in a square. — sure beats doing Sudoku by hand.

I also would like the ability to enter my own puzzles, or more specifically, the ones in the daily news paper.

    Hi,

I echo the above comments: great widget, but it would be noce to have a timer. Otherwise best sudoku widget out there.

I’ve just discovered Sudoku and this is a great widget! I too would like a “reward” for solving a puzzle, such as flashing the widget on screen or something.

    Thanks for this.

I agree with a lot of the comments already made.

I’m pretty addicted, and the penciling in idea is great.

Thanks for all your hard work.

First I must again say this is GREAT widget. Still waiting for fireworks to start when I finish the puzzle but now I must ask….have I gotten much better at Sudoku or is that Easy, Medium, Hard rating not too accurate. I’m now doing HARD and doesn’t seem any different that the EASY I started with. Anyone else see this?

A few weeks ago, I saw Sodoku for the first time when a friend clipped it from the local newspaper. Your widget eliminated most of the tedium and made the game fun to play.

I got better until I could turn off “highlight incorrect answers”. Now I am no longer challenged by the 3×3 version.

If you think a board large enough to contain cells large enough to contain sufficient pencil marks is feasible on the 1024×768 PowerBook screen, then how about a 4×4 version based on hex values? Values along the left edge please.

And just for laughs, a binary version. :)

    take care,
    h

Just finished my first ever sudoku puzzle. Tried the one in the paper and got terribly frustrated and stopped. The hints help for beginners is great.

One thing I noticed though was that the timer stopped at what looked like 11min 30sec but the congratulations time said 11min 40sec. No big deal but just it was worth a mention.

Ok, I guess I am really lame, but the easy level is still to hard for me. I thought I would try to modify your widget to make it a little easier for me, and I think I found the place. In the html that defines the difficulty drop down box it has the following numbers listed:

    Easy: 340:0
    Medium: 370:20
    Hard: 390:60
    Diablo: 415:80

What do these numbers mean? And can I make it easier by setting it to something like 300:-20?

    Thanks,
    Jake

It would be nice if you grayed out the numbers on the bottom row after you have found all six instances of a particular number.

It would be nice if the timer only advanced when the dashboard was open.

    Thanks for a fun widget.

un bonjour amical de Brest (France)

you did a very good widget !!

For me, it would be nice to have a shortkey to undo the last move, and the last before the last… to say short, an unlimited undo key. Hence, you must memorise the entire sequence of numbers dotted on the board by the player.

Why this functionnality is great ?? after 20 minutes, if i see i’m in an impossible situation (ex. i have dotted two “1″ in the second column), i could go back and understand where my meaning was wrong. And then go ahead in another way… and perhaps, after 1h57mn, i may have the board successfully dotted!!

NB: did you realize the very bad effect of your widget on the performance and productivity of entreprise’s workers ??

    Excellent Widget! Nicely Done!

Like everyone else, I have a suggestion: The auto pencil is great but it doesn’t permit one to remove marks that have been deduced as incorrect. It would be nice if you could generate/update the pencil marks with a button click and then manually remove the ones you don’t want.

Very cool widget. Any thoughts on converting it to a Google Widget (release for Google Personalized Home):

This is one of my favorite widgets, I love to do these puzzles.

For us older folks out there can you put a stretch corner on the game so we can enlarge as need to? This would make it perfect. I have a hard time with the size now especailly since ther is such ambient stuff going on around and behind it.

Teriffic, I hope we get a reply!

Hey! Love the sudoku widget. One improvement I would love to see is to “gray out” the numbers across the bottom once all 9 have them have been successfully placed in the grid. For example, once nine 6’s have been placed in the grid, mark the 6 as completed. Right now write down 1-9 on a piece of paper and mark them off as I get each number done. This keeps me from checking for the same numbers after I have them completed which keeps my time lower. Thanks!
